Tips for Caring for Your Candles

You’ve sniffed and sniffed to find the perfect candle scent for your home. Now that you’re ready to light your candle, you’ll want to know how to properly care for it. Here are a few candle care tips from Margaret Mace, owner of Pure Scents Candle Company, and a producer at the Upper Merion Farmers Market.

Tip #1:  “Candles have a memory,” Mace says. The first time you light your candle, burn it for 1 to 2 hours so that it burns all the way around the jar. That way, the next time you light the candle, you’re not burning just the center of the candle, but the whole top layer.

Tip #2:  Trim the wick or not? Mace gets this question frequently. “Candles with a cotton core like mine are self-trimming,” Mace says. Popular commercial brands of candles don’t always have cotton wicks. Trimmed wicks smoke less, so be sure to keep them short.

Tip #3:  Location matters. If your candle won’t stay lit or you’re having trouble smelling its scent, place it in a different spot in your home. “There are air currents throughout your house that you may not notice,” according to Mace. Placing the candle in another location in your home ensures that you’ll be better able to enjoy it.
